A Note on HD 20722, a K Giant in Nebulosity

IUE spectra of RS Puppis and HD 20722 - Stars in symmetric dusty nebulae
Spectra obtained by the IUE satellite of the Cepheid variable RS Puppisand the K giant HD 20722, both of which are surrounded by symmetricnebula, are presented. Exposures were made in 1980 with the longwavelength redundant camera and 10 x 20 arcmin focal plane aperture at aspatial resolution of about 5 arcsec and spectral resolution about 6 A.No anomalies are found in the low-dispersion spectra of the stars withnebula with respect to those of apparently similar stars that lacknebulae. It is pointed out, however, that high-resolution studies of theMg II doublet are still warranted since the doublet profile, which isunresolved in the present studies, is a sensitive indicator of mass losseffects.

Discovery of a stellar object with surrounding nebulosity
A faint nebula with a central, very red star was discovered on ESOSchmidt plates. Photometry and spectra of the central star arepresented. The star is an early-G giant with a visual absorption of 4.5mag at a distance of 210 + or - 90 pc. The associated nebulosity isclearly reflection. Suggestions are made as to the evolutionary state ofsuch objects.

Further observations of a possible star-nebula system
Additional photometric and spectrographic observations are presented forthe high galactic latitude K giant HD 20722, which is suspected to beeither a newly-formed planetary nebula or a recently dismembered binarystar. The present observations find the K giant to be a normal star, consistent with a binary model but also with the possibility that theobserved nebulosity is due to a plate flaw or a background galaxy. Someadditional constraints are also placed on the surface brightness of thenebula.

A peculiar nebula surrounding the K giant HD 20722
A compact nebula, most probably due to reflected starlight, has beendiscovered around the high galactic latitude K giant star HD 20722. Theexistence of such a nebula implies that the star has experiencedsubstantial mass loss, which might have been produced by a stellar windfrom a giant leaving the tip of the asymptotic giant branch, or bybinary-star evolution.
