The effects of electron scattering and wind clumping for early emission line stars
The importance of electron-scattering wings is examined with respect tothe Wolf-Rayet (W-R) stellar spectra, the entire line profile, and thediagnosis of density inhomogeneities in stellar winds. The influence ofinhomogeneities on the derived mass-loss rates is then examined todevelop ideas related to W-R stellar winds and stellar evolution.Existing evidence regarding electron-scattering wings in W-R stellarspectra is reviewed, and present models are found to be inadequate todescribe the weak wings. Theoretical line profiles are computed by twoseparate methods, and the effect of an inhomogeneous density structureon the strength of the electron-scattering wings is examined. The lineprofiles and line strengths are similar to observed values except thatthe mean mass-loss rate is lower; the corresponding reduction in thestrength of the wings shows that the mass-loss rates for W-R stars areoverestimated.
