Rotational velocities of A-type stars in the northern hemisphere. II. Measurement of v sin i
This work is the second part of the set of measurements of v sin i forA-type stars, begun by Royer et al. (\cite{Ror_02a}). Spectra of 249 B8to F2-type stars brighter than V=7 have been collected at Observatoirede Haute-Provence (OHP). Fourier transforms of several line profiles inthe range 4200-4600 Å are used to derive v sin i from thefrequency of the first zero. Statistical analysis of the sampleindicates that measurement error mainly depends on v sin i and thisrelative error of the rotational velocity is found to be about 5% onaverage. The systematic shift with respect to standard values fromSlettebak et al. (\cite{Slk_75}), previously found in the first paper,is here confirmed. Comparisons with data from the literature agree withour findings: v sin i values from Slettebak et al. are underestimatedand the relation between both scales follows a linear law ensuremath vsin inew = 1.03 v sin iold+7.7. Finally, thesedata are combined with those from the previous paper (Royer et al.\cite{Ror_02a}), together with the catalogue of Abt & Morrell(\cite{AbtMol95}). The resulting sample includes some 2150 stars withhomogenized rotational velocities. Based on observations made atObservatoire de Haute Provence (CNRS), France. Ages of A-Type Vega-like Stars from uvbyβ Photometry
We have estimated the ages of a sample of A-type Vega-like stars byusing Strömgren uvbyβ photometric data and theoreticalevolutionary tracks. We find that 13% of these A stars have beenreported as Vega-like stars in the literature and that the ages of thissubset run the gamut from very young (50 Myr) to old (1 Gyr), with noobvious age difference compared to those of field A stars. We clearlyshow that the fractional IR luminosity decreases with the ages ofVega-like stars.

Catalogue of Apparent Diameters and Absolute Radii of Stars (CADARS) - Third edition - Comments and statistics
The Catalogue, available at the Centre de Données Stellaires deStrasbourg, consists of 13 573 records concerning the results obtainedfrom different methods for 7778 stars, reported in the literature. Thefollowing data are listed for each star: identifications, apparentmagnitude, spectral type, apparent diameter in arcsec, absolute radiusin solar units, method of determination, reference, remarks. Commentsand statistics obtained from CADARS are given. The Pulkovo Spectrophotometric Catalog of Bright Stars in the Range from 320 TO 1080 NM
A spectrophotometric catalog is presented, combining results of numerousobservations made by Pulkovo astronomers at different observing sites.The catalog consists of three parts: the first contains the data for 602stars in the spectral range of 320--735 nm with a resolution of 5 nm,the second one contains 285 stars in the spectral range of 500--1080 nmwith a resolution of 10 nm and the third one contains 278 stars combinedfrom the preceding catalogs in the spectral range of 320--1080 nm with aresolution of 10 nm. The data are presented in absolute energy unitsW/m(2) m, with a step of 2.5 nm and with an accuracy not lower than1.5--2.0%.

We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

An optical search for Beta Pictoris-like disks around nearby stars
A coronagraphic survey of more than one hundred stars has been carriedout in a search at optical wavelengths for circumstellar materialsimilar to that found in the Beta Pictoris disk. The survey stars wereprimarily dwarfs in the spectral range A to K and most were closer than100 pc. No evidence of circumstellar material was found around any ofthe stars, suggesting that Beta Pictoris is an abnormal object,surrounded by an unusually large amount of optically scatteringmaterial.

A survey for infrared excesses among high galactic latitude SAO stars
This project involves extending the previous analysis of infraredexcesses among a volume-limited sample of 134 nearby A-K main-sequencestars to a magnitude-limited sample of stars, culled from the SAOCatalog, with excesses determined from the IRAS Point Source Catalogflux density ratios. This new sample includes 5706 B-M type stars, 379of which have infrared excesses. The objective involved use of astatistically complete survey of objects in a standard catalog in orderto assess the frequency with which different physical processes canaffect the infrared output of stars. These processes include, but arenot limited to, orbiting cold particle clouds and the onset of rapidmass loss. It is concluded that cold disks are consistent with theinfrared excesses found among A-G dwarfs and G-K giants in the sample.

Search for Beta Pictoris-like star
The results are reported of a systematic search for Beta Pic-like stars,undertaken at ESO, CFHT and OHP. The candidate stars, either IRAS excessstars or shell stars, are investigated by means of high resolutionspectroscopy in the Ca II and Na I lines, which in the case of Beta Pic,are very peculiar. The observations are presented and it is shown thatamong the selected stars, few do show spectral similarities with BetaPic. Some interesting cases, HR10, HR2174, HR9043 and HR6519 arediscussed.

The late A-type stars - Refined MK classification, confrontation with Stromgren photometry, and the effects of rotation
The MK spectral classification for late A-type stars is refined and theeffects of rotation of spectral classification and uvby(beta) photometryfor these stars are examined. It is found that, for A3 stars, the4417/4481 A wavelength ratio produces results that are inconsistent withthe Stark broadening of the H lines. It is suggested that this ratio isnot useful as a luminosity criterion at any spectral type.Self-consistent sequences of narrow- and broadline standards areestablished. The results of the refined classification system arecompared with Stromgren photometry, showing a set of low-v sin i A-typestars with anomalously large delta(c1) indices for theirluminosity types. It is proposed that these stars are rapid rotatorsseen at fairly low inclination angles.

Diffraction-limited imaging. III - 30 MAS closure phase imaging of six binary stars with the Hale 5 M telescope
Images of six binary stars that show diffraction-limited resolution forthe Hale 5 m telescope are presented. This corresponds to a resolutionof about 30 mas at 630 nm. The images were constructed from analysis ofphoton-limited speckle interferograms, with between about 200 and 1100recorded photons per atmospheric coherence time. Using a new applicationof the CLE, the diffraction-limited Fourier amplitudes of the objectswere first recovered. The recovery of the object Fourier phase wasaccomplished through bispectral analysis of the specklegrams. Thisanalysis yields the object closure phases, from which the Fourier phasesare then extracted by a least-squares minimization. Direct Fourierinversion then produces the final images reported here. The dynamicrange of the resulting images varies from 3:1 to about 20:1. The seeingfor the majority of observations was estimated to be about 1.2 arcsec onaverage. Thus, for these simple objects, such imaging techniques arecapable of achieving a factor of 40 improvement in resolution whileretaining a contrast of 2-3 mag, under photon-noise-limited conditions.

Stellar integrated fluxes in the wavelength range 380 NM - 900 NM derived from Johnson 13-colour photometry
Petford et al. (1988) have reported measured integrated fluxes for 216stars with a wide spread of spectral type and luminosity, and mentionedthat a cubic-spline integration over the relevant Johnson 13-colormagnitudes, converted to fluxes using Johnson's calibration, is inexcellent agreement with those measurements. In this paper a list of thefluxes derived in this way, corrected for a small dependence on B-V, isgiven for all the 1215 stars in Johnson's 1975 catalog with completeentries.

Twelve additional 'Vega-like' stars
Twelve additional 'Vega-like' stars which show large excess fluxes at 60microns are found in the Bright Star Catalog from a systematic search ofthe IRAS point-source catalog. These stars range in spectral types fromB9 to F6, while they are predominantly early A-type stars. When combinedwith the 12 previously known stars, there are seven spectroscopicbinaries and one suspected astrometric binary among 24 Vega-like stars.The frequency of multiple systems among these stars is compatible withthat among nearby stars. Six Vega-like stars show significantdifferences (darkening) between absolute magnitudes calculated fromtheir parallaxes and those estimated from spectral types, as found forthe star Beta Pic. These apparent darkenings may suggest the presence ofcircumstellar disks viewed edge-on.

Binary stars unresolved by speckle interferometry. III
The KPNO's 4-m telescope was used in 1975-1981 to determine the epochsof 1164 speckle observations for 469 unresolved, known or suspectedbinary stars. The data, presented in tabular form, encompass visualbinaries with eccentric orbits, occultation binaries, astrometricbinaries, Hyades stars of known or suspected duplicity, and many longperiod spectroscopic binaries.

The period distribution of unevolved close binary systems
Period distributions have been examined for various spectral types ofabout 600 (eclipsing and spectroscopic) close binaries, which are likelyto be substantially unevolved. The comparison with the previouscorresponding analyses of extensive (but heterogeneous) binary samplesallows a clarification of the extent of the evolutionary andobservational selection effects. Remarkably, this analysis reveals agreat deficiency of short period binaries (with periods corresponding tocase A mass transfer) in the whole spectral range. For the late spectraltypes, this result may be connected with postformation angular momentumloss caused by stellar wind magnetic braking; at least for the late Band A spectral range, a ready interpretation of this finding is thatclose binaries of corresponding periods and spectral types are rarelyformed.

Balmer-line equivalent widths in main sequence B-F stars, and comparison with model atmospheres
Equivalent widths of the Balmer H-alpha, H-beta, and H-gamma lines weremeasured for 175 main-sequence B-F stars and compared with curvescalculated from various model stellar atmospheres. When averaged overeach spectral subtype, the equivalent widths are well represented by thestandard models; this confirms the previous finding of Glushneva andDoroshenko (1980) that the models are fully consistent with theobservations.

A comparison of the orbital inclinations of the spatially close spectroscopic double stars
The reported investigation takes into account 888 spectroscopicbinaries. It was possible to obtain 120 groups whose elements arespatially close according to the given definition. These 120 groupscontain 313 spectroscopic binaries. 136 of these binaries are 2-spectrumsystems, 177 are 1-spectrum systems, and 62 are eclipsing binaries. Thenumber of systems with known luminosity class is 54. The spectraldistribution of the 313 systems is discussed. The orbital inclinationsand other parameters are presented in a table.

Binary stars unresolved by speckle interferometry
The epochs of 372 speckle observations obtained with the 4-m Mayalltelescope at KPNO during 1975-77 are given for 156 unresolved visual,astrometric, spectrum, occultation, and spectroscopic binary stars.Specified thresholds are set for detectible angular separations andmagnitude differences so that the negative observations presented herecan be used to place constraints on orbital parameters.

Photoelectric H-alpha line photometry of early-type stars
A total of 293 bright stars of spectral types O, B, A, F and ofluminosity classes I through V have been measured with a photoelectricphotometer equipped with two interference filters of 30-A bandwidth, onecentered on H-alpha and the other at 6622 A. A correction term has beenallowed for the response of the photometric system and for the continuumenergy distribution in the two spectral regions considered. Theresulting photometric alpha indices of H-alpha line strength arecompared with previous H-alpha, H-beta, and H-gamma photometricmeasures, H-alpha equivalent widths, the MK spectral type, /u-b/, /c1/,and b-y indices of the uvby photometric system. The results emphasizethe advantage of using H-alpha line photometry to discriminate betweenemission-line effects and luminosity effects in early-type stars and todetect emission-line variability.
